Swimming and a little more time to explore

A few days in Winnipeg

We were in Winnipeg in April for the Best of the West Fest. Swimming was the main reason for the trip, but this time we weren’t chaperoning the swimmers, and having a rental car gave us a lot more freedom to explore between sessions.

The weather couldn’t quite decide what season it was. Our first day felt almost like summer, around 24°C and warm enough for a T-shirt. The next day dropped to around 7°C with plenty of wind, and the puffy jacket came right back out. :)

Best of the West

Of course, a good part of the trip was still spent at the pool watching the racing.

But compared with some of our other swimming trips, we had a little more time to ourselves this time. With a car, we could also get beyond the places within walking distance of the hotel and see quite a bit more of Winnipeg and the surrounding area.

The Forks

We spent quite a bit of time around The Forks, walking along the river and exploring one of the most interesting parts of the city.

We stopped at The Forks Market, had the famous fish and chips, and wandered around without much of a plan. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights and the riverfront also gave me plenty of reasons to keep reaching for the camera.

Downtown Winnipeg

We also spent some time walking and driving around downtown, including the Exchange District and some of the older streets and buildings.

Having a car made it easy to explore different parts of the city whenever we had a little time between swimming sessions.

St. Boniface

Across the river, we explored St. Boniface and stopped at the cathedral.

It felt quite different from downtown Winnipeg, with its own history and character, and was definitely worth crossing the river to see.

A drive north of the city

One of the advantages of having a rental car was being able to venture farther outside downtown.

We drove north to Lower Fort Garry and spent some time exploring the historic site. From there, we continued toward Lockport before eventually making our way back to Winnipeg.

It was a nice change from the city and gave us a chance to see a little more of Manitoba along the way.

Assiniboine Park

We also spent some time at Assiniboine Park, including the zoo and The Leaf.

After downtown streets, historic buildings and our drive north of the city, it was another completely different side of Winnipeg to explore.

A little more time to explore

It turned out to be a great few days in Winnipeg.

There was plenty of swimming, but this time we also had enough time to explore the city, drive a little farther out, eat some good food, and see quite a bit more than we usually manage on a swimming trip.

The weather certainly kept things interesting too. Somehow we went from T-shirt weather to pulling out the puffy jacket within about 24 hours. :)

And, as usual, I came home with far more photos than I expected.
